DistroWatch A website devoted to keeping an eye on the 100+ different Linux distributions.
Red Hat An excelent Linux distribution by an good corporate citizen. Now Red Hat only offers comercially supported versions (see below). They do have a very attractive educational price, though.
 
Fedora Project Red Hat have given their free Linux distro to the community for development. While I was initially disappointed in this move, it promises to be a very well supported project and liberates it from some of the corporate restraints. (In other words it is cutting edge but may be buggy!)
 
Debian An open Linux distribution created by an all voluteer team.
 
Suse Europe's most popular Linux distro. Now owned by Novell.
 
TurboLinux Asia's most popular Linux distro.
 
FreeBSD Real propeller heads don't use Linux! A very secure Unix for PCs.
 
Darwin The heart of Apple Mac OS X is a free Unix operating system.
 

Specialized Linux Distributions

ClarkConnect ClarkConnect transforms standard PC hardware into a dedicated broadband gateway and easy-to-use server. It includes firewall and security tools, along with file, print, web, e-mail, proxy, antispam, content filtering and VPN servers.
 
FreeSCO Make an old PC into a router. It can take up to 10 network cards and 10 modems. Easy configuration.
 
K12 Linux A linux terminal server based on Redhat. It provides a server that network terminals can connect to and boot over the network. Great for extending the life of old PCs because the terminals don't need much power at all, just a fast network.
 
SystemRescueCd A bootable CD with useful tools to rescue or repair a system. Includes partitioning software (Ala PartitionMagic) and software to copy partitions (Ala Ghost).
 

Setting up Your Linux Server

Firewall Simple instructions and a script to setup iptables firewall on your computer. No explanation about firewalls, ports, or iptables, though.
 
NAT Setup Simple instructions for setting up NAT (Network Address Translation) so you can share an Internet connection with one IP address.
